  As far as golfing destinations are concerned, Tenerife has always had a considerable amount to offer. As an island in the beautiful Canary chain, its setting cannot be bettered, with mountainous peaks rising above picturesque beaches and rural towns. The temperate climate makes for beautiful, warm evenings and mornings – and year-round golfing on the island.
  
  Opened in 1987, the Golf del Sur on the southern coast of Tenerife is a hotspot for avid golfers, with a world-class course set amidst scenic ravines. The layout of the course was designed by Pepe Gancedo, with later remodelling in 2006; when playing the Golf del Sur course, the careful layout considerations are very evident, with each hole flowing organically on to the next. A local tournament takes advantage of the Golf del Sur course every year, with the high standard of playing and gamesmanship always ensuring a captivating event.
  
  At the heart of the Golf del Sur is a championship course comprised of 27 holes, so, accordingly, golfers of all levels of ability will find something to challenge them here. Hole 3, in particular, has become slightly notorious for its par 5 difficulty and is found on the northernmost section of the course, amongst indigenous cacti and rock features. Hole 4 is almost similarly challenging, with a par 4 rating and surprising turns that keep you on your toes. The landscape at this point of the course is quite truly breathtaking, with exceptional views of Mount Teide and a variety of colourful flora hemming the pathways.
  
  The course prices for Golf del Sur are surprisingly modest; 18 holes for the price of 85 euros between October and April, with this tariff dropping to 56 euros for the period May to September. The 9 hole prices are similarly reasonable; 50 euros during the peak months and 34 euros throughout the rest of the year. Golf buggies are available with inbuilt GPS and prices range from 18 to 38 euros dependent upon length of usage and time of year – also, clubs can be hired at the resort for 20 euros should you not wish to travel with your own. A driving range is located on-site, offering 40 balls for 2 euros and a respected golf school is available if you fancy a few pointers on your swing.
  
  As far as getting to the Golf del Sur is concerned, the Tenerife South airport is certainly the best bet; the airport is just a 10 minute drive from the golf course and receives inbound flights from all the major carriers. After touching down, just drive west along the Autopista del Sur (TF-1) for approximately 3 miles, turn south onto the TF-65 and at the second roundabout take the second exit and follow the Lugar el Guincho south for a mile, finally arriving almost right onto the greens.
